Catherine Bagnall & L Jane Sayle (On We Go, In the Temple, Massey University Press) in conversation
6pm, Thursday 22nd February 2024
Join us in Schrödinger's Books for a Conversations with Authors event at 6pm on the 22nd of February with poet L. Jane Sayle and painter/illustrator Catherine Bagnall!
About the authors:
Jane Sayle grew up on the south coast of Wellington, the child of English immigrants who came to New Zealand after the Second World War. She has been a dealer in curios and ephemera, an art writer and reviewer, a lecturer in the history of New Zealand visual culture and a traveller.
In 2021, collaborating with artist Catherine Bagnall, she published her first book, On We Go, (Massey University Press) a book of poems and watercolours exploring personal connections with the natural world in the context of a feminine sublime.
Their second collaboration, In the Temple, (Massey University Press) was published in 2023. It maintains a focus on nature while exploring intense personal connections with the living world that take the reader into the realms of private ritual and the power and meaning of special places and moments in time.
Catherine Bagnall grew up on the bushy eastern shore of the inner Wellington harbour. An interest in mythological worlds and enchanted natural spaces began in childhood there.
Inspired by Rosi Braidotti’s theories of the post-human and especially the idea of "a new love of the world," Catherine’s work depicts the 21st century life of non-human creatures and forest-dwelling girls in the wild green places of the natural living world. She says: "I think trees are so utterly important – I worship them."
A recognised experimental watercolourist, maker of objects and performance artist, she also lectures in fashion, art & design.
